More research suggests that it’s time to abandon the enthusiasm for vitamin D.

High doses of “Sunshine Vitamin” do not generally reduce the risk of fractures in healthy elderly Americans. Researcher reported Wednesday.

This is the latest in a series of disappointments with nutrients that were once expected to have widespread protective effects. The same study of nearly 26,000 people already found that playing a lot of vitamin D pills did not prevent heart disease, cancer, or memory loss.

Getting enough vitamin D is important for strong bones, but “the more it is, the worse it is,” said Dr. Merrill Lebov of Brigham Hospital in Boston, the lead author of the study.

An estimated one-third of Americans over the age of 60 take supplements, and despite years of controversy over whether the average elderly needs either, more than 10 million vitamin D levels Blood tests are done every year.

The latest findings added to other trials with similar results should end the discussion, Drs wrote. Steve Cummings of the California Pacific Medical Center and Clifford Rosen of the Main Medical Center Institute commented on a medical journal.

“People should stop taking vitamin D supplements to prevent major illnesses,”-and doctors should stop regular screening that raises concerns, the pair concludes. They were not involved in the latest research.

How Much Vitamin D Should People Take? The United States recommends 600 to 800 international units per day for full use by everyone, young and old. Our skin produces vitamin D when exposed to sunlight, which can be even more severe in winter. Milk and certain other foods are fortified with helping nutrients.

The bigger problem was that it would be better to have more than the recommended amount to prevent fractures and possibly other disorders. To address conflicting scientific reports, Dr. Joan Manson, Head of Preventive Medicine for Brigam and Women, tracks various health outcomes of approximately 26,000 generally healthy Americans in their 50s and older. Started the biggest research of this type. The latest results compare fractures in people who take high doses (2,000 international units of the most active vitamin D, called D-3) or dummy pills daily for 5 years.

The supplement did not reduce the risk of fractures of the lower back or other bones, Le Boff reported in the New England Journal of Medicine. Vitamin D and calcium work best together, but even 20% of study participants who also took calcium supplements did not benefit, she said. Nor was the small number of study participants with low blood levels of vitamin D.

Still, LeBoff warned that people who may need supplements for osteoporosis and other disorders that cause bone thinning, or people with severe vitamin D deficiency, are not included in the study. And Manson said more research is needed to determine if there are other high-risk groups that could benefit.

Overall, “these findings overturn the doctrine and question the value of regular screening of vitamin D blood levels and comprehensive recommendations for supplements,” Manson said. “Spend time outdoors, be physically active, and have a good heart diet leads to greater health promotion for most people.”
