Vaccine may affect children suffering from multi-system inflammatory syndrome associated with COVID-19
Las Vegas (KLAS)- The Health District of Southern Nevada reports two additional cases of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children in Clark County, Nevada. Both patients were COVID-19 positive and required hospitalization, but were discharged and recovered.
Children with two cases in Clark County, Nevada, are fortunate because they are recovering from MISC, but other children in another part of the country have died of a rare disease. 8 News NOW spoke with Dr. Constantine George, a physician in internal medicine and pediatrics. He said that many children of MISC were infected with the virus causing COVID-19 or had contact with infected persons, although there are no known causes.
The symptoms of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children consist of the following components:
- heat
- Stomach ache
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- Neck pain
- rash
- Bloodshot eyes
- Malaise
But not all children have the same symptoms, according to experts.
However, if the child has any symptoms, the parent should contact the child’s pediatrician. If your child has difficulty breathing or if he or she experiences severe chest or stomach pain, take them to an emergency department immediately.
8 News NOW asked Dr. George how the vaccine treating COVID-19 affects MISC.
“As with all kinds of vaccines we give to children and adults, we reduce the incidence of infections, because nothing is 100%, so when you vaccinate someone you get It reduces the incident of Down syndrome, which is much milder and less severe, so the polyinflammatory syndrome we deal with does not occur,” Dr. George said.
MISC causes inflammation in various body parts, and treatment includes supportive care and medications to treat inflammation until a COVID-19 approved vaccine is available.
The best way to reduce the risk of MISC for children is to take precautions against the virus that causes COVID-19. Wash your hands, put on a mask, keep your child 6 feet from others, and keep them away from sick people.
