Bird flu found in Meeker County turkey run
Increased bird mortality within the Meeker County flock prompted testing and confirmed the presence of highly contagious influenza.
Meeker County, Minnesota — State animal health officials say an outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) on a chicken farm in Meeker County is more commonly known as bird flu.
Minnesota Animal Health Commission Commercial turkey farms reported increased bird mortality last weekend, saying tests confirmed the presence of HPAI. The herd was first isolated and then depopulated to stem the spread of a highly contagious disease.
State officials say poultry from infected farms will not enter the food system.
Minnesota was hit by a wave of bird flu last spring. Migratory birds were forced to stay longer than usual in Minnesota due to extreme weather. The animal health expert expected that fall migration could cause HPAI to surge again, but he didn’t expect it to be so soon.
Dr. Shauna Voss, senior veterinarian with the Minnesota Animal Health Commission, said: “HPAI is here and biosecurity is the first line of defense to protect birds.”
The Minnesota Animal Health Commission has established a “controlled zone” around the affected facilities in Meeker County and is working to identify all businesses in the area with commercial or backyard poultry farming. Commercial flocks are quarantined and tested regularly to ensure the virus is not spreading.
Producers noticing clinical signs of avian influenza in their flock (such as reduced water intake or increased mortality) should immediately contact a veterinarian or the Minnesota Avian Influenza Hotline at 1-833-454- 0156).
HPAI is not just a Minnesota problem. Since the spring, the virus has affected 414 flocks in 39 states, causing the loss of more than 40 million birds.
