st. LOUIS, Missouri (KMOV) – A study by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine and St. Louis University School of Medicine found that a man with low testosterone was 2.5 times more likely to be hospitalized with COVID than he was.
Since the pandemic began, men have appeared to be more susceptible to COVID than women. Local researchers wanted to know why.
Dr. Abhinav Diwan is a physician at the University of Washington’s Barnes Jewish Hospital, specializing in cardiology. He was the senior author of that study.
“Early research suggested that men were worse off than women, but it was suspected that it was because of testosterone.”
In many cases, the men who were hospitalized had underlying medical conditions, which were often associated with low testosterone.
Dr. Sandeep Dhindsa, a physician at St. Louis University, is the director of endocrinology at SLU Hospital.
“The men in the hospital are older men with obesity and diabetes.
Researchers went back about five years into the medical records of critically ill hospitalized patients and found that testosterone levels were chronically low, sometimes near zero.
Symptoms of low testosterone include sexual dysfunction, depression, irritability, and fatigue.
Treatment with testosterone hormone therapy has reduced the risk of serious illness. However, hormone therapy can also increase the risk of prostate cancer and heart disease.
Diwan and Dhindsa recommend that men with symptoms of low testosterone talk to their doctor about whether it’s appropriate to start hormone therapy.
