New area-wide prevention zone set up after bird flu confirmed in Clacton
BIRD influenza prevention zones were established in many parts of the East after a highly contagious strain emerged near Clacton.
Parts of Norfolk, Suffolk, and Essex have now been declared Avian Flu Free Zones by the government.
The Ministry of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said bird keepers in the area must follow strict biosecurity measures to protect flocks and reduce the risk of further outbreaks.
An Emergency Control Zone was established near Little Clacton on 18 September after a case of the “highly virulent” H5N1 strain was confirmed in chickens at one facility.
The strain was subsequently confirmed in birds in Hadley, Suffolk, inaugurating a new prevention zone.
Richard Irvine, UK’s Deputy Chief Veterinarian, said:
“This means all bird keepers in the region must act now to prevent the disease from entering their flocks and from spreading further.
“Whether you have a few birds or thousands, legally mandated farms and small properties have stricter biosecurity standards. .
“It is in your interest to do so to protect your birds from this highly contagious and devastating disease.”
