Texas dog, first animal infected with virus causing human coronavirus
Texas Animal Health Commission officials say the Texas two-year-old dog is the first animal in the state to become infected with the virus that causes coronaviruses in humans.
In news releasesA health commission official said dogs in Tarrant County were examined by a veterinarian as a precautionary measure after their owners had the virus.
“There is no evidence, based on current knowledge, that pets play a significant role in spreading SARS-CoV-2 to people,” said Dr. Andy Schwartz, the state veterinarian of the release. “Limiting contact with pets and other animals is always as important as anyone else infected with COVID-19 to protect against infection.”
The vet says the dog is healthy.
Currently, there are 12 virus-positive animals in the United States, According to the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service..
Currently, routine testing of animals is not recommended, officials said.
