Researchers Create New Antibiotic to Avoid Superbug Resistance
Researchers at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) have created a new class of antibiotics that can be rapidly redesigned to circumvent resistance by dangerous ‘superbugs’, according to the findings.

“The pharmaceutical industry typically tests thousands of compounds before having a lead candidate,” Valéry said in a press release. “In our case, it took just 20 designs to create an entirely new family of antibiotics.”
Pricilicidin is based on natural antibiotic peptides, making it less susceptible to antimicrobial resistance compared to existing conventional antibiotics. Her supervisor, Dr. Charlotte Conn, pointed out that current natural antibiotics are expensive, difficult to manufacture on a large scale, and quickly broken down by the body.

This antibiotic is derived from indolicidin, a natural antibiotic found in the immune system of cattle.
