In early 2020, Keith Prowell was making the most of his retirement in New York and staying active in swimming and Tai Chi. But as reports of a new, unknown virus began to circulate, he began to feel unwell.
“I started feeling something was wrong and I didn’t know if it was a cold or the flu or something new called COVID-19,” recalls Keith.
Keith was instructed to isolate himself from loved ones, including his wife and son. His cough worsened and he was pale and weak.Concerned, Keith received emergency treatment and was immediately transferred to a hospital, where he tested positive for his COVID-19.
“People were dying and their numbers were increasing every day. I wondered if I would be part of that statistic,” he says.
While in hospital, Keith was given the opportunity to participate in a clinical trial of antiviral therapy. He began receiving treatment immediately, and soon his breathing and speech improved.
As he recovered, the experience inspired him to spend more time with his family and be fully with the people he met.
“When you feel like everything is lost overnight, you develop a deep appreciation for the little things you experience every day,” says Keith.
