First Case of Coronavirus-Associated Inflammatory Syndrome Confirmed in a South Carolina Child

Both children are under 10 years old, DHEC said in a Sunday news release. One is in the Midland region of central South Carolina. The other is in the Piedy region in the northeast of the state.

Experts are still learning about MIS-C and are trying to determine why some children experience it and why they do not.

But two recent studies- Both were published last month in the New England Medical Journal -MIS-C indicates that it can cause serious symptoms and can be fatal. They have shown that 80% of MIS-C patients require intensive care treatment.

In one report, CDC researchers analyzed 186 cases from 26 states between March 15 and May 20.

Patients were hospitalized for a median of 7 days and 20% needed ventilation to help breathing. 4 patients, or 2%, died. The median patient age was 8 years. Only 7% of patients were younger than 1 year, most were 1 to 14 years old, and 16% were 15 to 20 years old.

In a second report by the New York Department of Health, 99 children who were suspected of having MIS-C were hospitalized between March 1 and May 20. In this study, the median length of hospital stay was 6 days.
