“I left home so hard that I never saw my mother again.”

The man who survived Covid-19 talked about a broken heart from a coma when the virus was discovered and claimed an 83-year-old mother in the same ward of an Irish hospital.

O’Sullivan was a full-time caretaker for his beloved mother, Mary, in Cork.

On March 14, last year, Ian got sick and prepared for the Covid test, carefully self-isolating.

He adhered to government guidance and remained self-isolated for nine days before suddenly becoming desperate.

“I didn’t feel 100pc. The next day I felt sick and the day the country was closed. I noticed a virus.

“I was going to a couple of pubs that week to watch Cheltenham’s race (in Cork)-I don’t know if that was it. It’s a million dollar problem, but I don’t know.” Ian RedFM told the Neil Prendeville Show.

“I was a little tired-I felt flu-like symptoms. I had tonsillitis, a sore throat, and became very ugly.

“I went into lockdown because I tracked all the viruses on the media. Due to my mother’s age, I was very worried about her. At that time, the protocol self-isolated and tested. Was to receive

“I just did it-I stayed in my room at home. A friend dropped a pill into my house. I was for 9 days. I was in bed most of the time -It really knocked me, I was tired.

“I tried to get away from my mother, but I took care of her as much as I could. I was cooking for her as much as I could. I never left home. My sisters also stayed home. I brought food, but no one came in. I didn’t leave home.”

On the 10th day, he was taken to the Mercy University Hospital (MUH) in Cork, where he became the first case of Covid-19.

“I woke up at home for ten days. I felt like someone was sitting on my chest. I couldn’t hold my breath. I felt like I had weight.” For all 10 days I didn’t hear anything (Covid-19) test. I was waiting for a phone call for the test-I didn’t hear.”

He rang his GP and she immediately organized an ambulance to rush him to the hospital.

“I wasn’t good enough to talk to (my mother). I said goodbye to her by eye. When I left home, I had (personal protection).”

Ian was eventually put into a MUH-induced coma.

His mother had a serious illness just 48 hours later and was rushed to the same hospital.

She died on April 2 while Ian was still unconscious.

The MUH doctors tried to get Ian out of the coma on April 3, but he became seriously ill and had to be unconscious.

Eventually, on April 6, Ian managed to escape from the coma-and after a while, he learned at FaceTime that his mother had died.

“Two days later I found my mother sick and taken me to Saint Joseph in the same ward. She was in a room directly opposite me,” he said.

“She was in an ambulance. At first she wore a gas mask, but it was getting worse. I couldn’t speak.

“They finally told me they had to put me into an induced coma, probably for two weeks. I was immediately upset, but I couldn’t breathe.

“I was going to get my best care-I was the first person to bring Covid there. I was scared but knew I had to do it.”

Ian admitted that the joy of his survival had eased when he realized that he had lost his mother.

“I came up and wanted a daughter and mother-the sisters didn’t want news from someone in the family. They couldn’t go directly to the ward. My sister made a video call to me About the mom who called me.

“I relive it quite a bit. She died four days before I came out of coma. I couldn’t take me to my grave and go to my mother’s funeral. Was so close to her, but I couldn’t meet her.

“For all of my family, the funeral was very, very realistic. My mother died on April 2nd and only 26 hours later she was in the Kircurie. (Covid-19), 100 Everybody (from the family) met the mother again after she entered the MUH, which was horrifying for the family.

“I never fought home for my life and never met my mother.”
