West Nile virus rediscovered in Jarrell
WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) – On Friday, the Williamson County City Health District (WCCHD) announced that a mosquito trap sample taken from the Sontera community tested positive for West Nile virus.
In response, the City of Sontera Public Facilities District will be spraying mosquito repellents on Sunday and Monday evenings, saying the sprays do not pose a significant health risk, but asking that pets be kept indoors if possible.
This is the seventh positive trap confirmed in Williamson County this year and one of 13 Texas counties that have tested positive on the West Nile this year.
Symptoms of West Nile virus include fever, headache, body aches, rash on the trunk, and swollen lymph nodes. People over the age of 50 and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop severe symptoms.
What can you do to protect yourself?

- Drain any water that has accumulated around the site. Mosquitoes can thrive in even a teaspoon of water.
- Use an EPA-approved larvicide. Insecticides are products used to kill mosquitoes before they take off into the air, when they are still in their larval stage. It can be applied to standing water and helps limit mosquito populations.
- Use insect repellent and wear long sleeve shirts. Mothballs keep bugs out, and the long sleeves reduce the bite area.
