Phoenix doctors on alert as US measles cases spike
PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) — Doctors at Phoenix Children’s Hospital are on high alert after a spike in measles cases across the country.
It’s the Valley’s low measles vaccination rate that’s alarming doctors, and they’re concerned more cases could arise in the area. In order to reach herd immunity, a region needs at least 95% of the population to be vaccinated.
However, according to the Arizona Department of Health Services, only 89% of kindergarteners are vaccinated against Measles. That means if there is just one case, it could spread rapidly.
“I’m definitely concerned. Especially, as I mentioned, this is a very contagious virus,” said Dr. Wassim Ballan. “So even if we have one contagious person who lands in our community, they are inadvertently exposing other people. Since we have a lower than desired vaccination rate, that can cause an outbreak here in Arizona. So we are watching this very closely,” said Dr. Ballan.
Measles is typically a rash of tiny red spots combined with flu-like symptoms. Dr. Wassim Ballan with Phoenix Children’s says It is often thought to be one of the most contagious viruses for people who don’t have any protection.
For example, if an infected person enters a room, their coughing and sneezing will leave that air infectious for two hours. According to the CDC, about one in five people who are infected and aren’t vaccinated are hospitalized. Complications range from mild to severe and can include pneumonia and even brain swelling.
About one to three in every 1,000 children infected die from a measles infection. Only those 12 months and older can be vaccinated, so babies are particularly at risk.
Dr. Ballan says vaccination rates are lower because of possible vaccine skepticism from the pandemic.
The good news, though, is that you can get the shot up to 72 hours after a measles exposure and get significant protection. Doctors at Phoenix Children’s are encouraging parents to act fast.
