Tri-state doctors brace for impact as measles cases rise in U.S.
ASHLAND, Ky. (WSAZ) – The number of measles cases has skyrocketed over the past three months, with the number of cases in the United States now reaching triple digits.
The CDC has reported approximately 113 measles cases. None are in our area, but pediatricians like Dr. Jonathan Maynard of King's Daughters of Ashland Pediatrics are preparing for the impact here.
“This is one of those things that seems inevitable and it's just a matter of when it happens,” Maynard said, adding that declining vaccination rates are a cause for concern.
“There is a huge amount of misinformation, which is increasing vaccine hesitancy and refusal,” he said.
Patients who have refused to vaccinate their children with measles say they have concerns about the vaccine's safety.
In a recent advisory to health care workers, the CDC said two doses of the vaccine are 97% effective and areas with low vaccination rates are putting their communities at risk.
“The most dangerous thing about measles is that it's actually contagious for about five days before symptoms appear,” Maynard said. “You don't even need to have person-to-person contact to spread it. You just need to be in the same room as someone.”
Doctors are stressing the importance of vaccination ahead of spring and summer travel, as the CDC reports that 93% of cases are associated with international travel.
“There is no better prevention method other than vaccination,” Maynard said.
Research proves it to be true. If you look at the data before measles vaccination, measles vaccine was associated with 2 million deaths per year.
“Especially in the United States, one in every 500 people reported infected has died,” Maynard said.
