Quebec ministry to introduce rabies vaccine plan after rabid raccoon sighting
The state Department of Environment will distribute vaccine bait to 17 municipalities in the Eastern Townships and Montérégies after a rabid raccoon was reported in Vermont, 10 kilometers from the Quebec border.
From April 22 to April 30, crews will place 46,200 vaccine baits in 17 municipalities covering approximately 660 square kilometers to reduce the risk of raccoon rabies returning to Quebec.
“Raccoons, skunks and foxes have been vaccinated against raccoon rabies, which will help protect human health,” the department said in a news release. “Wooded areas, river banks, the edges of agricultural fields and spaces near bins are particularly targeted.”
Bait will be placed in the cities and towns marked on this map.
The weather-resistant bait resembles a greenish ketchup packet and emits a sweet scent to attract target species, the ministry said.
The ministry says it is safe for humans, pets and the environment, but residents are urged not to handle the bait if found.
“Rabies cannot be transmitted under any circumstances,” the ministry said.
Although it is safe, the ministry has instructed people to wash any body parts that have come into contact with the broken vaccine bait and call Infosante (811).
Pets that feed are not vaccinated.
The Ministry recommends the following advice to prevent rabies:
- If bitten or scratched, wash the wound with soap and water for 10 to 15 minutes and call 911.
- Do not approach unknown wild animals or domestic animals.
- Do not touch dead animals with bare hands.
- Take steps to keep wildlife away from your property, such as keeping outdoor trash cans out of reach and keeping pet food indoors.
- Do not remove unwanted or orphaned animals.
- Please have your pet vaccinated against rabies.
