Dr. Philly sees what an “absolutely devastating” COVID-19 looks like, and then her Facebook alert goes viral – CBS Philly
Philadelphia (CBS)-Philadelphia doctors have received a lot of attention on Facebook’s post warning that they need to take the coronavirus more seriously and take precautions. Dr. Kimberly Heckert is helping patients with COVID-19 regain their lives at Jefferson Hospital Rehabilitation Medicine.
“The impact can be absolutely catastrophic,” Heckert said.
Heckert feels the warning isn’t taken seriously, which is why she turned to Facebook.
“I never imagined it would be so popular,” Heckert said.
Posts to friends warned that the virus was life-changing and urged them to stay vigilant.
“We get only one body and one life. It shouldn’t be bet,” Heckert said.
“This is true. The virus is not a joke,” said Greg Garfield, 54, a COVID-19 patient.
Garfield lost several fingers after being hospitalized with COVID-19 for several months, and Lindseygoff, 27, lost part of the appendix and colon due to COVID-19.
“I was really sick, and probably the worst I’ve ever been,” Gough said.
Doctors have acquired COVID-19 and can cause various complications, many of which are long-lived.
“Even a gentle course can have ripples,” Heckert said.
Heckert is surprised that her Facebook post has been shared by thousands and wants the warning to be taken seriously. She says being at the forefront of a pandemic is destructive, not just to the patient.
“There were days when I was very sad,” Heckert said. “I felt traumatic the day of returning to the care of these patients.”
But knowing that she’s helping so many patients inspires her every day.
“If I could offer them the privilege to do it,” Heckert said.
An increasing number of patients relying on her and her doctors everywhere is expected.
