Ozempic, Wegovy improve taste, aid weight loss

Semaglutide, found in the weight-loss drugs Ozempic and Wegovy, has been shown to increase taste sensitivity, perhaps explaining another mechanism by which these drugs alter food preferences and lead to weight loss.
The drugs, also known as GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonists, altered gene expression in the tongue responsible for taste perception and also changed the brain's reward response to sweet tastes, Moika Jenstare Sebba, PhD, a researcher at the Ljubljana University Medical Center in Slovenia, told attendees at ENDO 2024, the Endocrine Society's annual meeting in Boston on Saturday.
The study was small, involving just 30 obese women, but Sebbah said at the press conference that it built on previous research.

The researchers measured the women's taste sensitivity over a 16-week period using taste strips with four concentrations of sweet, salty and bitter flavours. Their brain responses to a sweet solution dripped onto their tongue before and after meals were measured with functional MRI. They also took small tissue samples from the women's tongues.
People who took semaglutide had improved taste sensitivity and regeneration of taste buds on the tongue compared to those who took a placebo. In response to sweet cues, people taking semaglutide also had increased activity in brain regions that provide feedback about reward, but this activity may be reduced in people with obesity. The shift to perceiving rewarding rather than neutral feelings in response to taste may be important for weight management.
Sebbah predicted that her findings may also apply to obesity specialists and patients taking GLP-1 drugs.
