A Vision 4 Hope will host UnityFest at Best Friends Restaurant on Godby Road in College Park to raise awareness and contribute to reducing the disproportionate impact of HIV and AIDS on communities of color.
Atlanta – Atlanta has one of the highest HIV infection rates in the U.S. — the city ranks third in new infections, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — and on Saturday, local advocacy groups will host programs to educate people about HIV awareness and prevention.
A Vision 4 Hope will host Unity Fest at Best Friends Restaurant on Godby Road in College Park to raise awareness and contribute to reducing the disproportionate impact this deadly disease has on communities of color.
“We're using the Unity Festival as a party with a purpose, but also to educate the community on what sexual health and prevention looks like,” said Dewayne Crowder, executive director of A Vision 4 Hope.
The event will run from 3 to 7 p.m. and will feature fun activities like bounce houses, skating, food and music, as well as educational services and health screenings.
“We'll be distributing free condoms as well as providing free STI testing, monkeypox vaccines, COVID and other preventive health services,” Crowder said. “We hope people walk away with the education and prevention materials they need.”
HIV and AIDS hit black people harder than other ethnic groups. Emory University and Gilead Sciences recently published a study showing that in Atlanta, black men are more than six times more likely to be infected with HIV than white men. Black women are nearly 17 times more likely to be infected than white women.
“This isn't just an LGBT issue, it's about everyone,” said Cedric Harris, an outreach strategy specialist at the group. “Everyone needs to learn about their sexual health. Sexual health is part of your overall health, and you want to be mindful of it.”
