While there are still a few weeks of summer left, the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department (LLCHD) encourages families to make sure their children are up to date on routine vaccinations before school starts.

“Vaccinations help keep children healthy, ready for school and ready to learn,” said Deputy Health Director Kelly Curnen. “Wellness exams and school or sports physicals are a great time to check with your health care provider about any vaccines your child may need.”

Vaccinations help protect children against many childhood diseases, including chickenpox, influenza, measles, mumps, polio, and whooping cough.

Required and recommended vaccines for children and adolescents include the following:

Beginner – State law requires that students entering kindergarten or first grade (depending on the school district's enrollment grade) and transfer students have proof of the following vaccinations:

  • Hepatitis B vaccine (3 doses)

  • Three doses of diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (DTaP) vaccine

  • Three doses of polio vaccine (IPV)

  • Two doses of measles, rubella, and mumps vaccine (MMR)

  • Two doses of chickenpox vaccine

Junior and Senior High Schools – Adolescents and transfer students entering 7th grade should receive all of the vaccinations listed above, plus a Tdap booster shot for pertussis. In addition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends one dose of the meningococcal vaccine at age 11 or 12 and two doses of the human papillomavirus vaccine, which protects against a variety of cancers. A second dose of the meningococcal vaccine is recommended at age 16.

College – The CDC recommends the meningococcal vaccine, especially for college freshmen who live in dorms and for students who may not have received their second dose by age 16. This vaccine helps prevent bacterial meningitis and other serious illnesses.

Childcare/Pre-kindergarten – Children enrolled in licensed child care facilities and school-based preschool programs must also keep their age-appropriate immunizations up to date.

The COVID-19 vaccine is safe and effective for children. The CDC recommends that children 6 months of age and older be given the updated 2024-25 COVID-19 vaccine when it becomes available this fall.

LLCHD participates in the Vaccines for Children program, which provides free or low-cost vaccines to eligible uninsured, underinsured, Native American and Medicaid-covered children. More information about the program is available online at health.lincoln.ne.gov or by calling 402-441-8065.

If a child's health care provider participates in the Nebraska Immunization Information System, parents can access their immunization records online. https://dhhs.ne.gov/Pages/Immunization-Records.aspx.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
