Ontario to offer RSV vaccine to more children and pregnant women
Ontario is expanding its respiratory virus vaccination program this year to include infants, high-risk children and pregnant women ahead of the fall flu season.
On Thursday, the government Respiratory syncytial virus The RSV vaccine is intended to protect at-risk children and mothers from a potentially serious form of the virus.
Starting this autumn, families with infants under the age of two and other high-risk children will be able to get the RSV vaccine at public expense. Pregnant women can also get a similar shot that will protect their children for six months after giving birth.

“As we prepare for this year's respiratory disease season, we all need to take simple and effective steps to protect the most vulnerable in our communities and health-care system,” Dr. Ciarán Moore, Ontario's chief medical officer of health, said in a statement.
“RSV is a highly contagious virus that causes respiratory infections, particularly in the very young and elderly in our community.”
Moore said the expansion means all high-risk children under the age of 24 will be covered this fall.
Dr. Chris Simpson, Ontario's chief medical officer of health, called the measure a “game changer” to protect children.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, flu season has become more complicated for health systems due to the spread of the so-called triple threat of influenza, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus, which puts particular strain on children's hospitals during the colder months.
“By increasing the number of children on the RSV prevention programme, the Government is making it easier for families to get the care and protection they need ahead of the respiratory disease season,” Health Minister Sylvia Jones said.
