Michigan Department of Health reports state's first case of West Nile virus this year
Health officials in Michigan have confirmed that a state resident has been infected with West Nile virus, the first case in the state this year.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said the Livingston County resident likely contracted the virus while traveling in Nevada.
“This patient spent the majority of the time necessary for West Nile virus to incubate in the human body out of state while vacationing in an area with high levels of West Nile virus infection,” said Emily Ding, a medical epidemiologist with the state health department.
Mosquitoes carry the West Nile virus, but most cases of the disease are asymptomatic.
The health department said it is testing mosquito swarms and animals to track the spread of the virus. Ding said mosquitoes have tested positive for the virus in Bay, Kent, Ottawa, Saginaw and St. Clair counties.
In addition, authorities said 10 birds have I was infected with a virus.
West Nile virus is often asymptomatic. However, in some cases It may cause Symptoms include headache, fever, pain, and fatigue.
