Why pertussis cases are on the rise in Canada
Whooping cough cases are on the rise in Canada, with some provinces reporting sharp increases compared to pre-pandemic averages.
More than 11,670 cases have been reported in Quebec so far this year, a significant increase from an annual average of 562 cases between 2015 and 2019.

Canada's chief public health officer, Dr. Theresa Tam, said last week that the highly contagious, vaccine-preventable disease, also known as whooping cough, is on the rise across Canada and can be very serious in young children.
Public health officials say whooping cough is a cyclical disease that increases every two to five or six years.
“We appear to be seeing that cyclical increase right now,” said Dr. Allison Kris, Toronto Public Health's associate medical officer of health.
Characterized by a persistent cough, the disease begins with cold-like symptoms and progresses over several weeks to coughing fits that often end with a whooshing sound as the infected person catches their breath.
New Brunswick's acting chief health officer said the province has not seen a whooping cough outbreak in more than a decade.
“You could say that the increase in cases has certainly come too late,” Dr. Yves Léger said in an interview Tuesday.
Leger said he expects the current number of cases to get worse before they go down, given the increased public awareness around the spread of the virus in the state and the resulting increased reporting.
The vaccine that protects children against whooping cough is part of Canada's routine immunization program and is given starting at two months of age. Four doses are required for the initial vaccination, followed by booster doses during childhood and adolescence.
Acellular pertussis vaccine is also recommended for adults and during pregnancy.
Chris said the drop in routine vaccination rates since the COVID-19 pandemic could indicate waning immunity against whooping cough.
Dr. Anna Banerji, a pediatric infectious disease specialist in Toronto, said in an interview that hesitancy towards COVID-19 vaccines seen during the pandemic may have also impacted regular vaccination.
Another challenge is that “even in fully vaccinated people, immunity may wane over a period of time,” Banesi said Tuesday.
The United States and other countries have also reported an increase in whooping cough cases, leading the Pan American Health Organization to issue an alert in July urging countries to expand surveillance and vaccination.
