Measure your blood pressure at your fingertips
Article Contents
Soon you'll be able to measure your blood pressure at home using just your smartphone, thanks to an app called Vibro. Billion LabVibro is a spinoff company founded by electrical engineers from the University of California, San Diego. Designed by Edward Wang, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, and doctoral student Colin Barry, of the Jacobs School of Engineering and Design Lab, Vibro uses the phone's native camera, vibration motor, and motion sensors.
Unlike other devices currently on the market, Vibro does not require a separate blood pressure cuff. When a patient's finger is pressed against the vibrating phone screen, the pressure of the finger dampens the vibrations. The phone senses how much the vibration dampens and uses this value to calculate the amount of force being applied to the screen. The camera can see through the relatively thin tissue of the finger both the pulse and the point where blood flow is blocked by finger pressure. Oscillometric blood pressure is then determined using standard calculations based on the time that has passed since blood flow was blocked.
Competing solutions for measuring blood pressure in development use a method called pulse wave analysis, which is affected by factors such as body length, arterial stiffness and body position, making it an unreliable method despite incorporating calibration with a blood pressure cuff. “The literature is starting to show that pulse wave analysis of blood pressure is very unstable,” Wang says.
Development of the Vibro app has been supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) through multiple programs, including the third-year cohort of NIH MassAITC Pilot Award recipients (a $4.3 million initiative) and the NIH POCTRN program based on the CAPCaT mechanism. Billion Labs' pilot research at the University of California, San Diego was funded by Wang's Google Research Scholar Award fellowship.
The developers' dedication to user-centric design recently received a special mention in the Don Norman Design Awards. If you press too hard, blood flow will stop before your pulse is measured. If you press too lightly on the smartphone screen and blood flow stops, your blood pressure won't be measured. In addition, a steady pressure of several seconds is required to measure blood pressure.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
