Only Half of Americans Plan to Get COVID-19 and Flu Vaccines This Year – Survey | Infectious Diseases
A new survey finds that fewer than half of Americans plan to get a COVID-19 vaccine this year, while just over half plan to get a flu shot.
The new report release The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center reported Thursday that 37% of Americans have been vaccinated in the past but don't plan to get vaccinated this year. The same percentage of respondents said they don't need any of the vaccines surveyed, including those for influenza, COVID-19, pneumococcal and respiratory syncytial virus, the report said.
The report also found that while the majority of adults (56%) have received or plan to receive a flu shot this fall, only 43% have received or plan to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. Additionally, the survey found that adults aged 65 and older are most likely to get the recommended vaccine.
In a statement accompanying the report, Nora Colburn, medical director of clinical epidemiology at The Ohio State University's Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital, said: said“Respiratory virus season has begun with a triple threat of influenza, COVID-19 and RSV. Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation about vaccinations, but the reality is that vaccinations are safe and highly effective in preventing severe illness and death.”
