Kingston area women encouraged to qualify for new cancer screenings

New expanded eligibility criteria for breast cancer screening further expands access to self-referral screening, and Kingston Health Sciences Center (KHSC) is encouraging eligible Kingston area residents to take advantage of this opportunity. I encourage it.

“With breast cancer being the most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in women, screening is key to ensuring cancer is detected in its early stages,” KHSC Breast said Dr. Eric Sauerbrei, Medical Director of Diagnostic Imaging Kingston (BIK). “In fact, a woman has a 1 in 8 chance of developing breast cancer during her lifetime,” the site said in a written statement on Oct. 23.
According to an announcement from the state, the state will contribute $20 million to participating OBSP partners to increase production capacity through field time, appointments and the addition of new staff.
In recent years, OBSP, hospitals and other participating clinics have performed approximately 700,000 mammography exams each year in Ontario.

KHSC's BIK site opens in 2023 on John Marks Avenue.
“Screenings take place at our BIK sites, where we offer comprehensive breast screening services, including mammography and other advanced imaging techniques, in a comfortable and supportive environment,” Sauerbrei said. “We are dedicated to providing the highest standards of care using state-of-the-art equipment designed to ensure accurate diagnosis.”
The Kingston site will be available to eligible individuals, including women between the ages of 40 and 74, who can call the BIK site directly to schedule an appointment without a doctor's referral.
People aged 30 to 69 who are at high risk of developing breast cancer may be eligible for Ontario's high-risk screening program. People who think they fall into this category should talk to their doctor or nurse to determine if they are eligible.
