Bird flu infects more poultry in four US states

Four states report further increase in H5N1 avian influenza outbreaks poultryThis includes a second detection in backyard poultry in Hawaii and an outbreak on a commercial farm in California, according to the latest confirmation from the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS).

In Hawaii, the first outbreak was reported on November 17th in a backyard flock of 70 birds in Honolulu County, Oahu. The virus has also been confirmed at another backyard facility in the same county, which includes a habitat for nine birds, APHIS said.

California, which has been hit hard by dairy cattle and poultry outbreaks, has three more outbreaks in three more counties. These include commercial broiler farms in Fresno County with 172,800 birds, turkey farms in Merced County with 38,200 birds, and turkey farms in Stanislaus County with 22,400 birds.

Two states, Minnesota and Washington, have reported outbreaks in backyard poultry. Minnesota reported two incidents in Martin County, the first since July. In total, these sites are home to 70 birds. The Washington state outbreak occurred at a site in Whatcom County with 40 birds.

Further confirmation with wild birds and dairy farm development

In other viral developments, APHIS reported more than 100 H5N1 detections in the following regions: wild birdmostly sample collection dates in October and November. Most of the detections were from western states, and many were birds of prey found dead or waterfowl captured by hunters. Some of the detected cases were from Midwestern states such as Illinois, Kansas, and Minnesota, and the APHIS list also included a black vulture caught in Brevard County, Florida.

The group also included wild birds captured by authorities in California counties where dairy cattle outbreaks are occurring.

About the outbreak in dairy cowAPHIS confirmed one additional detection on a farm in California, bringing the state total to 336 and the national total to 550.

Elsewhere, today's Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture announced Require bulk milk tank inspections as an additional measure to prevent the spread of avian influenza to dairy cows. So far, no outbreaks have been reported on dairy farms in Pennsylvania. The order goes into effect today and will be implemented at no cost to farmers.
