Additional funding for Sheffield's secondary breast cancer research
Scientists who investigated why breast cancer has returned after years of successful treatment and form incurable secondary tumors have received extra funds to continue their work.
The current breast cancer research team at the University of Sheffield was given £500,000 on appeal by Patricia Swannell, an organization established to raise awareness of secondary breast cancer.
Money is used to investigate whether gene therapy can stop dormant cancer cells from awakening.
Team professor Penelope Ottwell said it could provide secondary cancer patients with “want better long-term survival and quality of life.”
Patricia Swannell was diagnosed with primary breast cancer in 2007. After mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, it became completely clear five years later.
In 2019, she began experiencing pain in her lower back and joints, and by 2021 she had been diagnosed with secondary breast cancer – it had spread across her bones, liver and abdomen.
A research project spokesperson said that most breast cancers do not return after treatment, but in some cases, cancer cells may remain dormant and undetectable in the body. there is.
Years later, they can wake up and begin to circulate in the bloodstream, and then develop tumors in other organs that cannot be cured, the spokesman said.
During the last 18 months of her life, Ms. Swannell has now started a breast cancer fundraiser, and since then the appeal has raised more than £1.4 million.
She passed away in 2023.
Her husband, Robert Swannell, said she hoped to take steps towards “previous detection, better treatment, and ultimately treatment.”

Potential treatments being studied in Sheffield involve modifying cells to allow the creation of types of proteins that can stop cancer growth.
