Early research has promising retinal robots

Even the most highly trained surgeons have a high interest when performing procedures on the retina, one of the smallest and delicate parts of the human body. Researchers successfully tested the robot using Encleated Pig Eyes and published the results in the journal this week Science robot. The study was led by Jake Abbott, a professor at U's Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, and Paul S. Bernstein, a retinal specialist at Moran Eye Center.
The retina is home to light-sensitive rods and cone cells that form the basis of vision. Although several genetic disorders cause these cells to form incorrectly, leading to vision disorders of various severities, new gene therapy techniques could reverse these conditions.
“The treatment of visual impairment is progressing rapidly,” Abbott said. “We need to make our surgeons better able to keep up with them.”
For example, the first gene therapy approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for genetic retinal disease requires injection into the universe between the retina and another layer of cells known as the retinal pigment epithelium. In addition to the complications presented by eye movements and hand trembling, this subretinal target is surprisingly small. The surgeon must introduce the drug between the two thin cell layers.
The device is not yet approved to operate human subjects, so testing requires human volunteers equipped with special goggles that allow animal eyes to be attached just before natural eyes. did. This allowed researchers to test the robot's ability to compensate for head movement and correct hand tremor during surgery on animal tissue without risk to volunteers.
In the experiment described in this study, the surgeon achieved a higher success rate while performing subretinal injections using a surgical robotic device, avoiding ophthalmic complications.
These results show that robots may improve patient care, according to co-author Irene Fan, a retinal surgeon at Moran I Center.
“The unique feature of this robot's head mount may allow patients to receive subretinal injections under intravenous (IV) sedation rather than general anesthesia,” Fan said. “IV sedation helps recover faster and safer in some patients. The robots provide more accurate delivery of gene therapy drugs compared to manual injections for more reproducible and safer treatments. It may be possible to do so.”
As the robot heads from the lab to the operating room, the journey is reinforced by the interdisciplinary collaboration that first made it.
