Japan's encephalitis causes a second death in Australia's NSW – before moving
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), encephalitis virus (JEV) in Japan is the main cause of viral encephalitis in 24 countries.

Additionally, one possible case of JE infection has been identified in a male in northern NSW. He probably acquired an infection while moving More Plains, Tamworth, and Shire guns. He is now recovering at home.
This is the fifth person to be infected with JE in NSW this season.
Dr. Jeremy McAnulty, executive director of health protection at NSW Health, said: press release“People need to take mosquito-borne infections seriously as they begin cleaning out the recent floods where mosquitoes flourish.”
“Like we left after heavy rainfall and flooding, water water is an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes. This increases the risk of people being bitten, especially if they work outdoors,” added Dr. McAnulty.
As of March 2025, WHO said a safe and effective vaccine is available to prevent JE.
In Australia, the JE vaccine is free for those who meet eligibility criteria and is available through local general practitioners, Aboriginal health services, and pharmacists.
In the US, one JE vaccine (Ixiaro) It is approved by the US FDA, and the CDC recommends it to travelers visiting endemic areas in 2025.
Last year, approximately 650,000 people from the US visited Australia. It has over 5 million residents, including Sydney, the NSW capital. The majority are not protected against JEV infection.
