Started with a bid to prevent anemia during pregnancy
Researchers hope that new treatments for pregnant women will help reduce the risk of stillbirth.
Figures from the NHS blood and transplant-led trial, and Oxford University, show that one in three pregnant mothers develops anemia.
This is a condition in which the blood produces lower than normal amounts of red blood cells and can be associated with stillbirth, postnatal depression, and bleeding.
The research team is currently working with the UK's obstetric ward to conduct the study by giving pregnant women iron supplements to see if it helps.
“At this point, if a woman is diagnosed with anemia during pregnancy, it can sometimes be treated, but sometimes it can be too late,” explained Haley Wheeler, a research midwife at Berkshire Royal Hospital.
The trial is funded by the National Institute of Health and Therapy (NIHR) and includes adopting one iron supplement per day and giving the other half to half of mothers who take the placebo.
John Radcliffe Hospital is in another hospital.
“We generally take an approach to treating it, but what we're doing in this study is trying to see if we can prevent anemia from occurring,” says Simon Stanworth, an NHS blood and transplant consultant hematologist at Oxford.
“I don't know if there's any benefit to taking one iron tablet every day.”
Researchers work with up to 50 maternity wards across the country, including John Radcliffe.
The trial, known as the Panda, is open to women with one baby in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy, where women can ask medical professionals for details or ask about participation.
Stanworth said:
“There are some very common treatments and management. We are beginning to do more research and scrutiny about these that are trying to move forward and see if they can do better.”
