Despite health officials' warnings about Legionnaires, Marshalltown's oktemberfest continues as planned
The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services and Marshall County Public Health recommended this year's Oakbart Fest festival travel from North Marshalltown “from a wealth of attention” amid the Legionnaire illness outbreak. Mayor Joel Greer read a letter from the MCPH at city council meeting Monday and acknowledged the concerns raised. “There are certainly concerns about Legionaire's illness, and how it will be sent is still a question,” Greer said. The exact cause of the outbreak has not been determined yet, but it is believed to be a cooling tower in the northern part of the city. “The volume of customers is declining due to illness and fear of such things,” said Joshua Brown, who manages the downtown business, who said the walk-in business has been slowed to crawl. “You should be confident that it's dead,” one member said, urging the city not to shift the festival before it started. Duane Dixon, former president of Octon Vallefest, warned that canceling or relocating at the very last minute would be expensive. The council voted 4-3 to maintain the event and refused state and county leadership. As of September 23, there were 71 cases of Legionnaires identified in Marshalltown. Two deaths have been reported. The exact source of the occurrence has not been confirmed yet, but perhaps Cooling towers in the northern part of the city.
A downtown business owner told members of the council that the outbreak had hurt pedestrians.
“The amount of customers has been reduced due to illness and fear of such things,” said Joshua Brown, who manages the downtown business, who said the walk-in business has been slowed to crawl.
Some councillors argued that the risk was reduced.
“You should be confident that it's dead,” one member said, urging the city not to shift the festival before it begins.
Duane Dixon, former president of OKtemberFest, warned that it would cost money to cancel or move at the last minute.
“We haven't cancelled. There are so many vendors who bought food and there's a lot of money on the line,” Dixon said.
Council 4-3 votes were cast to maintain the eventrefuses state and county guidance. Organizers later posted that OKtemberFest “continues on schedule.”
The OKtemberFest begins this Thursday and runs until Sunday.
