Jackson County horse turns out to be EEE
Jackson County, Michigan (WILX)-The Jackson County Health Department (JCHD) has announced that it has received information that horses have tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE). This is the 19th case ever diagnosed in horses, and so far there are no human cases in the state’s Jackson County.
The information is from the MDHHS and MDARD state departments, and JCHD will provide additional information to civil servants and local authorities when this single positive EEE horse case identified becomes available. I take it very seriously.
EEE is a rare and deadly virus that is transmitted to horses, deer and humans by being bitten by infected mosquitoes. It is one of the most dangerous mosquito-borne diseases in the United States, with a 33% mortality rate for those affected and a 90% mortality rate for horses. Signs of EEE include fever, chills, and sudden onset of physical and joint pain. EEE can lead to severe encephalitis, causing headaches, disorientation, tremor, seizures, and paralysis. Permanent brain damage, coma and death can also occur in some cases. JCHD recommends that anyone who develops any of these signs should see a doctor immediately.
Michigan is beginning to experience a wide range of EEE animal activities. Activities occur primarily in the central Michigan region between Grand Rapids and Claire. Currently, in the Jackson County case, Michigan has 19 confirmed horse cases so far.
