South Korean authorities have not found a direct link between influenza vaccines and recent deaths

The government of the country has launched an influenza vaccine campaign, fearing the possibility of simultaneous spread of coronavirus and influenza.

Since last Friday, at least 36 people, including 17 years old, have died after being vaccinated against the flu. According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), the average age of deaths was 74 years.

As of Friday, more than 14 million people were vaccinated against the flu, of which 9.4 million were children, the elderly and pregnant women, according to KDCA.

Professor Ki Moran of the National Cancer Center in South Korea said the flu vaccine is known to cause serious side effects in 1 in 10 million people.

In 2019, she added, 227,000 people over the age of 65 died in South Korea. Looking at recent numbers, this is an average of 621 deaths per day.

KDCA decided not to suspend influenza vaccination on Friday. According to a KDCA statement, the Vaccination Experts Committee will meet on Saturday morning to review additional data.

Rare side effects

KDCA’s Friday meeting took place after increased scrutiny from experts and politicians.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Health, South Korean Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyu called for a thorough investigation of the dead on Friday because of public unrest. He did not ask for the vaccination campaign to be cancelled.

The Korea Medical Association, a coalition of 130,000 doctors, has urged the government to suspend the vaccination program for a week until they determine the cause of death.
