Allegheny County Passes Dark Milestone with COVID-19 Cases Over 1K

(Pittsburgh) — Allegheny County passed a depressing milestone on Thursday, reporting more than 1,000 new cases of coronavirus for the first time since the start of the pandemic.
A month ago, that number seemed far away.
“It’s hard to report these numbers. I wanted this level of community not to spread … I recommend canceling parties, weddings, rallies, events and staying home as much as possible. “I will,” said Dr. Debra Bogen, director of the county health department, in a press release. “My heart is directed at all families who have lost their loved ones during this pandemic. We can and must do better.”
Of the 1,028 new cases, only 11 are from tests over a week ago. There is a delay between the submission of test samples and the reporting of results to the state. The county’s COVID-19 dashboard provides a timeline showing the date of the case by the time the test is conducted.
The age of newly infected patients is 1 month to 98 years.
Thursday was also a record day for state-wide cases, as the Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 11,406 new infections.
Both counties and states may soon set new records. Throughout November, daily coronavirus case reports broke record highs, often only a few days. As the percentage of positive tests continues to increase, it is clear that these high numbers are not due to increased testing, but to increased spread of the virus.

State and county health departments are urging residents to cancel social events such as weddings and holiday celebrations, but are permitted by government order.
In addition to losing lives, the community health system is at risk of being overwhelmed by COVID-19 patients. Healthcare providers may have to distribute health care immediately due to staff shortages.
