Binge Drinking surges during blockade: Survey-Consumer Health News
Tuesday, December 8, 2020 (HealthDay News)-A new study shows that the COVID-19 pandemic and the stresses it causes in life exacerbate heavy drinking.
In line with a pandemic-related stay-at-home order (“blockade”), researchers conducted an online survey of approximately 2,000 US adults from mid-March to mid-April 2020. Based on the answers, each participant was categorized as drunk, non-drinking, or non-drinking.
Approximately 32% of respondents reported drinking during a pandemic, and drinking increased alcohol intake during this period compared to before the blockade. Studies show that people who do not drink heavily consume the same amount of alcohol as before.
The odds of heavy drinking for heavy drinkers (believed to be men who drank 5 or more and women who drank 4 or more within 2 hours) increased by another 19% each week of the stay-at-home order.
The probability of increased overall alcohol intake for heavy drinkers was more than double that of those who did not drink excessively, 60% compared to 28%. This was especially true for people with a history of depression or illness, the researchers found.
Sitara Weerakoon, a researcher who is a candidate for a PhD at the University of Texas, said:

Researchers have found that drinkers drank an average of four drinks at a time during the pandemic. They drank up to 7 drinks at a time. Those who did not drink heavily drank up to two glasses on average.
Investigators analyzed a variety of factors and found that respondents were blocked on average for four weeks, spending 21 hours a day at home. About 72% did not leave home for work.
The limits of the study include self-reported survey data and the question about drinking drinking did not specify the time when alcohol was consumed. The majority of survey participants are high-paying earners, a factor associated with dangerous alcohol use.
To prevent long-term health effects, researchers sought new interventions and preventative strategies for isolated people at risk of dangerous drinking.
