Covid-19: Scientists Test the Effectiveness of Consumer Masks and Improvised Face Covers
Scientists at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine have worked with the Environmental Protection Agency to study the effectiveness of various consumer face masks and correction masks for Covid-19.
Researchers used a methodological approach based on the OSHA fit test to determine the effectiveness of various masks based on fitted filtration efficiency (FFE).
Researchers have studied changes to seven consumer-grade masks and five medical procedure masks. These masks were worn by adult men. Researchers collected mask FFE measurements during a series of repetitive exercises of the torso, head, and facial muscles, as outlined in the OSHA Quantitative Conformity Testing Protocol.
Studies have shown that for consumer masks, it was 79% effective in blocking virus-carrying particles such as double-layered nylon masks, ear loops with nose bridges, and masks washed without inserts. .. A similar mask with one non-woven insert was 74.4 percent effective.
A three-layer cotton mask with ear loops was found to be the least effective at blocking particles with a 26.5% effect.
The unmodified medical procedure mask with ear loops provided a filtration effect of 38.5%. However, the effect of the mask increased to 60.3% when the ear loops were tied in a specific way to improve the fit. Adding a layer of nylon to these masks gave an 80% effect.
A cotton bandana or a folded surgeon’s general style mask provided 50 percent filtration.
The 3M 9210 NIOSH approved N95 respirator mask was found to be 98% effective.
Details on the effectiveness of these masks, including details on the filtration capacity of various masks, can be found in a study published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine.
“Changing the surgical mask improves the fit of the mask, which enhances the filtration function and reduces the inhalation of suspended particles, but is the fit filtration efficiency of many consumer masks about the same as the surgical mask? I showed that it was more than that. ” Co-lead authors Phillip Clapp, PhD, are inhalation toxicologists and assistant professors of pediatrics at UNC School of Medicine.
Dr. Emily Sickbert-Bennett, co-lead author and director of infection prevention at the UNC Medical Center, said: “The more virus particles you have, the more likely you are to get infected, so it’s important to limit the amount of virus. It’s sick and can be very ill.”
