Kerala man runs 150 km to deliver medicines to 4-year-old cancer patient
A medical sergeant in Kerala has cycled over 150 km to deliver medicine to a 4-year-old cancer patient. The patient ran out of medication in late March during an ongoing lockdown.
The girl lives in the Alappuzha district of Kerala and travels monthly to a local cancer center in the state capital of Thiruvananthapuram for chemotherapy.
However, she was recently advised to take medication temporarily when the chemical unit was shut down to prevent coronavirus infection.
They contacted private police officer Antony Lattes when her family ran short because the drug was not available in her district.
Latish contacted a friend (Vishnu, a former police officer who is currently a sergeant at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical University), for help in obtaining medication from the local cancer center in Thiruvananthapuram.
“Vishnu was preparing to leave for Thiruvananthapuram (from Alappuzha) for his mission. He was planning to stay there for a week as part of his mission. And he agreed to help. “
Vishnu received a prescription from him and left on March 29, police officers said.
Long ride back
Vishnu’s prescription turned out to be old, but a doctor who knew the patient realized that she needed another medicine. Vishnu managed to get what he needed from the pharmacy, but had to save hours of trouble.
However, one challenge remained. The girl needed medicine by 6 pm that day.
Vishnu first tried to send them halfway to Kollam. The plan did not work.
So he decided to return to Alappuzha.
“Vishnu had delivered the medicine to his family by 5:10 pm,” police officer Antony Latesche said. “It was very dangerous to ride his … bikes in less than 150km.”
Latish says the girl’s family is poor and “has struggled to cover the costs of treatment,” and hopes that someone will take a step forward to help them.
Vishnu did not receive any money from them, he said.
