Meet a blind pianist in the amazing brain that neuroscientists are studying
Prodigy Matthew Whitaker Was a blind jazz pianist, but at the young age of nine he was able to play an active part in the music industry. He started playing the piano all over the world at the age of 11. He was so great that he got the attention of many neuroscientists.
Whitaker was born with retinopathy of prematurity and caused blindness. But that didn’t stop him from being one of the best pianists of his generation.
Neuroscientists conducted Whitaker’s tests to understand how Whitaker’s brain works. They played the keyboard and asked him to complete the MRI scan and at the same time participate in a hearing test.
Tests have shown that the visual cortex, the area that processes Whitaker’s visual information, overdrives when playing the piano or listening to music. This suggests that the blind pianist’s brain uses this area to help perceive unvisually stimulated music.

Matthew Whitaker: Amazing Blind Pianist
Whitaker first appeared at the New Orleans Jazz Festival in the past spring. Given that jazz music started there, he described the experience as wonderful.

Whitaker’s visual cortex overdrives
His amazing work has caught the attention of neuroscientists, including Dr. Charles Lim, who is studying how the brains of highly talented musicians work. He took Whitaker to an MRI scan at the University of California, San Francisco. At the same time, he gave Whitaker a small keyboard and asked him to play.
In addition, Whitaker underwent a series of hearing tests, listening to lectures and music. While listening to the lecture, Dr. Lim noticed that Whitaker’s visual cortex was inactive. But that wasn’t the case when the music was played.
