Etowah County vaccination efforts generate high turnout.Some turned their backs
Voter turnout is high Etowah County Health Department Drive-Through COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic The venue for the Coosa Landing on Thursday was not a shock to the staff of the Gadsden / Etowah County Emergency Management Agency.
“Judging by the number of calls we received, we’re not surprised,” said GECEMA spokesman Breona Cole.
GECEMA helped organize the event and worked with the Gadsden Police, Fire Department and Public Works Department to support logistics and transportation.
Distribution began at 7 am and by around 10 am GECEMA reported that the vaccine was out of supply and that those not yet in the parking lot would have to wait to return to another distribution at a later date.
According to Cole, shortly after arriving for setup at 5 am, people began lining up to get the vaccine. She said it was encouraging to see people wanting a vaccine.
“It would have been disappointing to have 100 people in attendance,” Cole said.
Cole did not know how many people were vaccinated. Everyone was working to get out of the venue and wasn’t discussing the numbers.
Last week, about 250 first responders and health care workers were vaccinated in health clinics. The clinic on Thursday was the first local clinic to provide vaccination to qualified second-stage (including people over the age of 75) because the vaccine was available.
The venue was equipped with roll-up doors that allowed vehicles to pass through the main auditorium, allowing health department staff to set up tables and prepare two rows of vehicles. When the necessary paperwork was completed, the staff went to the car window and administered the vaccine.
The recipient was given time and was sent to the parking lot to wait for 15 minutes. This is a precautionary measure against possible responses to vaccination. Cole said there were people checking them in their car during the waiting time to make sure everyone was ok.
Vaccine demand backs up traffic
Traffic in the area was not OK. From time to time, vehicles are backed up on George Wallace Drive to Interstate Exit 759, over Broad Street Bridge down First Street to the parking lot of Gazden City Hall, and Meian Boulevard and the bridge there. Was backed up to.
Gadsden police were directing traffic, and the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office and the Public Utilities Board helped direct traffic around the venue parking lot and back door.
For nurse practitioner Wendy Miller, it was a waste of three hours of waiting. When she and her husband arrived at the venue parking lot, they found that the number of people in line to get vaccinated matched the amount of vaccine available. They will have to wait for vaccination later.
“It was really encouraging to see many people wanting to get the vaccine,” she said.
Miller hopes she, and more importantly, her husband could get it on Thursday. She said her immunity was weakened by the drugs he was taking and she faced a greater risk of being infected with the virus.
He works at Snead State Community College and one of his duties is the COVID scanning people coming into his building. There, students are expected to return to on-campus classes soon.
As a healthcare provider, Miller said he could arrange vaccinations through Rainbow City’s Super Bee Drugs.
“But I feel guilty when I can’t get vaccinated,” Miller said.
Many other people waiting in line couldn’t get the vaccine. Miller said they headed for Meian Boulevard when they left the venue. “Cars lined up all the way across the bridge,” she said.
Among the vaccinated people were Dale Butler, Charles Scott, and David Fowler. They all work at the Collier Butler Funeral Home in Gadsden.
Butler said exposure to the virus was a concern for corporate staff. In addition, he said his wife and daughter were nurses and when they found that the vaccine was available, they urged him to get it.

Theresa Johnson spent hours side by side, but was rejected only when the vaccine ran out.
“I’m very worried about my 91-year-old mom,” Johnson said. “We must remain very isolated for her protection.”
Will Reed, chief of emergency medical services at the Gadsden Fire Department, has obtained the vaccine. He said he was very relieved that the vaccination was in progress. He is relieved to be able to get a second vaccination.
“It will reduce some of the stress,” Reed said.
He said GFD chief Stephen Carroll went “beyond” to ensure the safety of the members of the division throughout the pandemic. Firefighters did the same, but with additional training and additional equipment available.
According to Reed, the number of calls to the ministry’s “people under investigation” is increasing. Answering such calls depends on the type of call. In most cases, one responder wears full protective equipment to assess the situation and determine if more personnel are needed. This saves you personal protective gear when you don’t need it.
In serious events such as cardiac arrest, Reed said everyone would react in a suit.
The agency said it is currently supplying sufficient PPE. Members of the office staff search for sources every day, but some items are hard to find.
According to Reed, the chief counts the PPE kits and N95 masks used daily to ensure that the department has what they need.
He said some of the department’s staff were vaccinated against COVID-19. Some people haven’t made their own choice. It wasn’t a requirement, he said, but it was encouraged.
Regardless of vaccination, fire department personnel will continue to use recommended protective equipment to protect themselves from the virus while answering the phone, according to Reed.
