Lungs infected with COVID-19 are more damaged than smokers’ lungs, doctors say

Raleigh, NC (WNCN)-A trauma surgeon at the forefront of COVID-19 has found that virus-infected lungs are more damaged than smokers’ lungs. She said it was true even if it was asymptomatic.

Myra Ramirez from Sampson County said she was infected with COVID-19 early in the pandemic.

“My family was often told that I would die,” Ramirez said.

Ramirez lives in Chicago but grew up in Clinton, North Carolina. Her mother jumped on a plane from RDU to Chicago, thinking she might not be in time for goodbye.

Ramirez was the first person to have COVID-19 and had a double lung transplant in the country. Seven months later, she is still alive, but is dealing with the long-term effects of the infection.

“My friend in North Carolina has heard about COVID and in the news about COVID, but that’s still happening,” she said.

Before her diagnosis-her lungs were strong enough to run up to 5 miles a day. She worked from home and was not a smoker. However, the damage became so severe that she was placed at the top of the list of transplants.

She has complications like post-surgery infections.

“From everyday work to appearance, it affected me in almost every way I could think of,” she said.

Many patients now have long-term complications.

“This new COVID lung we see turns out to be actually worse than the smoker’s lungs,” said Dr. Brittany Bankhead Kendal of Texas Tech University. She works in the trauma unit and ICU. She is looking closely at the injured lung in a trauma unit where the patient is hospitalized for problems other than coronavirus.

She and her colleagues began to notice the pattern of x-rays and said they could now distinguish between infected and healthy lungs without seeing the patient.

“I was walking around the community and thought it was okay, but people who have just taken a positive test can still see it,” said Dr. Bankhead Kendal.

Dr. Bankhead-Kendall is worried about the future wave of patients seeking long-term care. She said some patients came weeks after the initial infection as a result of lung damage.

“They have these blood clots, have these collapsed lungs, and these chest x-rays show worsening scars,” the doctor said.

Ongoing recovery

Many of those patients will also face significant medical costs.

Ramirez continues to work to maintain medical insurance at home. She needs it Please help me pay for the visit With specialists, surgery and follow-up visits.

“I still have to pay more than $ 300 a month just for my prescription. It’s insured,” she said.

She recovered from COVID-19 on paper, but in reality it’s not so clear.

“I’m not as enthusiastic and unmotivated as I used to be for all the setbacks,” she said.

She is currently encouraging people to be tested for COVID-19. Tests were generally not readily available when she became infected. Testing is currently free and can help prevent cases from reaching serious levels.

Dr. Bankhead-Kendall has a positive result for COVID-19 in his medical history so that he can provide appropriate care when he learns more about the long-term effects of COVID-19 when visiting a primary care physician. He said he encouraged people to list.

New supporting research

The Northwestern Memorial Hospital currently has 10 COVID-19 lung transplants, the most common in the world. A study by Dr. Ankit Bharat, chief of thoracic surgery at Northwestern Medicine, showed that COVID-19 had irreversible lung damage in patients.

According to their study, the effects can be very serious and the only option is to have a lung transplant. Dr. Bharat believes that as the number of COVID-19 cases continues to skyrocket, the need for lung transplants will increase.

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
