New Delhi: The Indian Medical Research Council (ICMR) announced on Saturday that some Indian health-care workers self-medicated with the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine had side effects such as abdominal pain, nausea and hypoglycemia.
Raman R Gangakhedkar, Head of Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases at ICMR, said data on some HCWs who started taking HCQ was used by the ICMR to start a study on the side effects of HCQ.
The average age of such health care workers is 35 years. The most visible side effect was that of abdominal pain, which was reported in 10 percent of all people who consumed the drug, and nausea-like symptoms in 6 percent.
“A lower proportion-approximately 1.3% -had hypoglycemia,” said Gangakhedkar.
Previous studies have found that 22% of these HCQ-taken health care workers have comorbidities such as diabetes and blood pressure problems, vascular-related illnesses and respiratory illnesses, and I get the illness that I said I started taking the drug.
“Even though they are health care workers, 14% of them show that they hadn’t had an ECG test before they tested it,” said Gangakkhedkar.
He further reported that AIIMS is conducting a study to evaluate the preventive and therapeutic effects of HCQ on COVID-19, the ability of the drug to both prevent and cure.
“ We need to understand that in many places healthcare professionals from fear are trying to take this drug, and in some places consumption is not so high, affecting research design and data collection. “We are having a hard time finding something homogenous. The population,” said the scientist.
He stressed that even healthcare professionals should take the drug after proper consultation with their doctor.
Gangakhedkar further said that ICMR will also launch another study to elucidate the efficacy of hydroxychloroquine as a prophylactic for COVID-19, with approximately 480 patients enrolled and studied for 8 weeks.
The ICMR has previously recommended the use of drugs as a prophylactic drug for healthcare professionals and home contacts who care for positive cases. In addition, the Federal Department of Health recommends the use of hydroxychloroquine in combination with azithromycin for those who are severely afflicted with COVID-19 who require ICU control.
“But the drug has side effects and should only be taken if prescribed by a doctor,” officials said.
Gambaquedkar responded to a question about the antiviral drug rendecibir, stating that the drug used during the outbreak of Ebola hemorrhagic fever could inhibit SARS-CoV-2 replication and its effectiveness in treating COVID-19. Research was part of WHO’s solidarity trials. “
