National Stroke Awareness Month Observed in May
National Stroke Awareness Month is celebrated in May to improve understanding and prevention of stroke. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that connects to the brain or a blood vessel in the brain occludes or ruptures. These blood vessels provide oxygen and nutrients to the brain. During a stroke, oxygen and nutrients cannot reach the brain, causing brain cells to die. When brain cells die where they regulate certain body functions, they can malfunction.
There are three main types of stroke: ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, and transient ischemic attack. Ischemic stroke is when there is an obstruction in a blood vessel and can be caused by blood clots, plaques, or other particles. Hemorrhagic stroke, on the other hand, occurs when a blood vessel ruptures in the brain, blocking the blood flow needed to keep the brain alive. The last type is a transient ischemic attack, sometimes referred to as a “ministroke.” Transient ischemic attacks differ from the other two types because blood flow to the brain is only briefly blocked during these “ministrokes.”
Apart from understanding the differences between stroke types, it is important to learn what to look for if someone thinks they have a stroke. Knowing these warning signs can help save someone’s life. Here are some acronyms to remember some warning signs. Remember when these happen. You need to act fast.
F-Face-Please give people a smile. Is one side of your face hanging when you are asked to smile?
A-Arm-Ask the person to raise their arm. Does one of their arms drift downwards when asked to raise it?
S-Speech-Is a person’s speech obscure or strange when asked to say a simple phrase?
T-Time – Time to call 9-1-1 if any of these signs are present.
Anyone of any age can have a stroke, but there are certain risk factors that can increase your chances. Some of these are uncontrollable risk factors, while others are controllable. Uncontrollable risk factors include age, gender, race, and family history. Controllable risk factors include obesity, diabetes, heart disease or high blood pressure, smoking, alcohol overdose, high blood cholesterol, physical inactivity, saturated fat, transfat, and an unhealthy diet high in cholesterol.
