UK warns of snow and ice as weather forecast to get colder

Wintry showers will set in across northern Scotland on Sunday afternoon as colder arctic air moves south across the UK over the weekend.

The Met Office warned that around 5 to 10 cm of snow could accumulate in the northern Highlands of Scotland by Monday morning, while lower levels could see 1 to 3 cm of snow.

There is also a risk of freezing temperatures with temperatures dropping overnight into Monday.

A weather system is expected to move in from the Atlantic Ocean on Monday, where there may be some uncertainty in the forecast.

Rain is expected to fall across most of England and Wales, with some snow expected on the northern border of the region. Snow is most likely to fall in the highlands of Northern Ireland, northern England and southern Scotland.

A Met Office yellow warning has been issued for northern England and southern Scotland on Monday and Tuesday.

Higher elevations in the Pennines could see 15 to 20 cm of snow, causing some disruption.

Lower-elevation towns and cities are also at risk of up to 2 to 10 cm of damaging snowfall. However, this will depend on the exact path the rain takes across the UK – the amount of precipitation and the altitude of the land.
