Possible contenders if British Prime Minister Starmer resigns
As British Prime Minister Keir Starmer comes under increasing pressure to resign, discussions are focused on his successor as leader of the ruling Labor Party.
The winner of any leadership race is decided by party members rather than the general public, and any individual seeking to replace Mr Starmer would need the support of 20% of the party in parliament (81 MPs) to mount a challenge, which the Prime Minister has said he would fight.
But none of the possible candidates is universally popular within the party.
Wes Streeting
The 43-year-old health secretary has long been rumored as a potential rival and many of the lawmakers calling for Starmer’s resignation are his supporters.
Streeting, whose full name is Wesley, was one of the most visible Labor figures during the 2024 election campaign and was hailed as one of its best communicators.
Regarded as a right-wing member of the Labor Party, he praised former Prime Minister Tony Blair and expressed his desire to lead the party.
British Health Secretary Wes Streeting has long been mentioned as a strong contender.
He comes from a working-class background in east London. Both his parents were teenagers when he was born. He grew up in a flat in a council housing estate he described as “bleak” and attended state school.
He said his grandfather was an armed robber who knew the Kray Brothers, notorious London gangsters.
He was elected to parliament in 2015 after studying at the University of Cambridge. As health minister, he has criticized striking health workers.
He is openly gay and his partner is a communications advisor.
In a potentially damaging connection, Streeting initially defended Labor archbishop Peter Mandelson when he was sacked as US ambassador over his links with the late US sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Streeting denied being close friends with Mandelson.
Angela Rayner
Former Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner is well-regarded among the left wing of the Labor Party and is known for her straightforward style.
She issued a warning to Starmer ahead of his big speech yesterday which many critics said was disappointing.
The Guardian quoted supporters as saying she had no intention of becoming a candidate but was preparing for a possible leadership run.
The 46-year-old is an unusual figure in a country long dominated by a ruling class disproportionately educated at private schools and the universities of Oxford and Cambridge.
Former Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner is well-received among the left wing of the Labor Party.
She grew up in social housing in northern England, left school without a degree and became a single mother at the age of 16.
A trade unionist before being elected to parliament in 2015, she was elected second-in-command of the Labor Party in 2020.
Pollster YouGov ranks her as the second most popular Labor politician, behind local mayor Andy Burnham, who is also a potential challenger.
But unresolved cases over her tax affairs, which prompted her resignation last year, could hinder her chances.
Rayner has three children. One of her sons is severely disabled.
Andy Burnham
Popular local mayor Andy Burnham has also long been seen as a potential rival to Starmer, although he has twice failed to stand as leader.
A long-time Labor politician seen as representing the “soft left”, he became a member of parliament in 2001.
He served as health secretary under Gordon Brown before leaving parliament in 2017 to become mayor of Greater Manchester in northern England, where he earned the nickname “King of the North”.
The 56-year-old has been re-elected mayor twice, most recently in 2024, and says he is not a Westminster insider.
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham
Burnham grew up in northern England and studied at Cambridge University after joining the Labor Party as a teenager.
As an MP, he lost leadership races to Ed Miliband and Jeremy Corbyn.
He has publicly opposed Starmer over welfare cuts and warned of a “climate of fear” in the party.
Burnham could not become leader immediately, as she would first have to win a by-election to become a member of parliament.
In January, Labor blocked Burnham from running in the upcoming by-election after she wrote to X that she wanted to do so.
Burnham, who is survived by his Dutch-born wife and three children, told The Huffington Post that although he is a “Catholic,” he is “not very religious now.”
other possibilities
Because of the wide range of candidates, another potential choice could be an existing minister who could assume leadership in a “caretaker” role.
Those discussed include Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, Defense Secretary John Healey, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband and Junior Secretary of the Army Al Khans.
Miliband served as leader of the opposition Labor Party after competing with his older brother David. He resigned after the party suffered a serious defeat in the 2015 elections.
Cooper, 57, who has been an MP since 1997, served as a minister under Starmer and Brown.
Like Cooper, who has been an MP since 1997, Healey, 57, became defense secretary under Starmer.
Carns, a 46-year-old former commando, will be elected to the House of Representatives in 2024. The Independent wrote that some MPs see him as a “left-field candidate”.
