Labor MP resigns from UK government over Starmer’s leadership

Welsh Secretary Joe Stevens left the cabinet meeting without comment, but made it known in advance that he was loyal to the prime minister.

“At a time when the country is facing serious challenges at home and abroad, a leadership contest would be a distraction,” she added.

“Keir Starmer must be given the opportunity to deliver the change we promised and to get on with the job.”

She said she and others coordinated a statement in support of the prime minister because they were angry about the current situation.

“As long as Keir Starmer wants to be Prime Minister of this country, we will support him.

“He’s the only person who can do this at this moment. It’s a huge job, the country needs him, the country wants him and we have to make sure he stays there.”

Gower Labor MP Tonia Antoniazzi told BBC Radio Wales Breakfast she thought Sir Keir’s time was up.

“The results of last week’s election speak for themselves. That’s why the best thing to do is to do it quickly, appoint someone as interim prime minister and move forward.”

She said she would support Darren Jones, Sir Keir’s principal secretary, for the role and described him as an “absolutely brilliant person”.

Ruth Jones, Labor MP for Newport West and Islwyn, also said the Prime Minister should set a timetable for his resignation.

Last week, Labor suffered a series of elections across the UK.

The party was born from a disastrous Senedd election in which it won just nine seats in the expanded chamber of 96 members.

Plaid Cymru is expected to lead the first non-Labour Welsh government to win a Welsh election for 100 years.

The election also saw Labor First Minister Eluned Morgan lose her seat and resign as leader of the Welsh Labor Party.

Labor also lost almost 1,500 members in local elections across the UK and fell to its worst ever result in the Scottish Parliament.
