US suspends $14 billion arms sales to Taiwan due to Iran war, Navy chief says | US-Israeli war against Iran
Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao’s remarks come as U.S. President Donald Trump gives mixed signals on the sale.

A senior US military official said Washington was suspending a $14 billion arms sale to Taiwan to conserve munitions for its war against Iran.
Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao gave an update to lawmakers during a Senate hearing Thursday, a week after arms sales took center stage in talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing.

“Right now, we’re pausing to make sure we have the munitions we need for Epic Fury — and we have plenty of them,” Cao told the Senate Defense Appropriations subcommittee.
“But we’re just making sure we have everything, but foreign military sales will continue when the administration deems it necessary.”
Cao said any decision on the sale — which would constitute the largest ever arms transfer to Taiwan — would be made by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The war has been on hold since the United States and Iran agreed to a ceasefire on April 8, but the sides have yet to reach a permanent peace deal.
The US Congress approved the arms package for Taiwan in January, but the sale requires Trump’s approval to move forward.
If approved, the sale would surpass the record $11 billion in arms for Taiwan approved by Trump in December.
Taiwanese Prime Minister Cho Jung-tai told reporters on Friday that Taiwan would continue to purchase weapons, according to Taiwanese media outlet FTV News.
William Yang, senior analyst for Northeast Asia at Crisis Group, said in a social media post that the pause “will exacerbate anxiety and skepticism about U.S. support for Taiwan and make it difficult for the Taiwanese government to request an additional defense budget for the foreseeable future.”
Trump, who confirmed discussing the arms deal with Xi, said last week in a Fox News interview that he “might” or “might not” approve the package.
Trump also suggested the package could be used as a “bargaining chip” – despite decades-old precedent barring any consultation with Beijing on arms sales.
China claims self-governance of Taiwan as part of its territory and opposes Washington’s continued but unofficial support for Taipei.
The US government does not officially recognize Taiwan but has pledged to help the island defend itself under the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, enacted shortly after the severance of diplomatic relations between Washington and Taipei.
Trump has continued to test the status quo in Taiwan in other ways, saying earlier this week that he would consider speaking to Taiwanese President William Lai Ching-te about the arms deal.
Such a move would break with four decades of diplomatic protocol barring direct talks with Taiwan’s leader and would almost certainly provoke an angry response from Beijing.
Trump had a phone call with former Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen after his 2016 election victory, but their talks took place before he was sworn in as president.
