Britain records hottest day of the year as forecasters warn of more extreme heat | uk weather

The UK recorded its hottest day so far this year, with temperatures reaching 30.5C in Kent. Forecasters have warned that more extreme heat will follow over the bank holiday weekend.

Temperatures in Frittenden reached 30C in May for the first time in England since 2012, according to the Met Office.

Forecasters expect the hot weather to continue, with Britain likely to see its hottest May on record on Monday. Temperatures in southern England and the Midlands can reach 33C.

Temperatures are expected to be around 31 degrees in the south and 26 degrees in the north on Sunday afternoon, the Meteorological Administration said.

The current record high temperature for May is 32.8C, set in 1922 at Camden Square in north London, 1944 at Horsham in West Sussex, Tunbridge Wells in Kent and Regent’s Park in central London.

UV levels will be high in most parts of the UK over the Bank Holiday weekend, with the UV index expected to be 7 in Manchester on Sunday.

Greg Dewhurst, chief meteorologist at the Met Office, told the Press Association: “High pressure will dominate throughout the Bank Holiday weekend.

“There is plenty of warm sunshine every day across England and Wales.

“Scotland and Northern Ireland will see more clouds at times, with some showers possible in north-west Scotland.”

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a yellow heatwave warning for the East Midlands, West Midlands, East England, London and the South East.

The warning will remain in place until 5pm on Wednesday and replaces the less severe yellow warning previously issued.

According to the UKHSA website, the warning means there is likely to be “an increase in deaths, particularly among those aged over 65 or those with existing health problems” and increased demand on all health and social care services.

An amber alert has been issued for the north-east and north-west of England, Yorkshire and the Humber and the south-west.
