Wildlife habitats planned to be restored in our most precious landscapes
Nature Minister Mary Creagh announced today (Monday 25 May) that precious wildlife habitats in some of nature’s most important locations are set to be restored thanks to new government funding.
The Government will invest £30 million to restore and create wildlife-rich habitats in some of Britain’s most iconic landscapes, from the wilds of Dartmoor to the rugged Lake District.
Our protected landscapes serve as vital havens for some of the country’s most threatened species, including hedgehogs, hazel dormouses, water voles and rare birds such as curlews and turtle doves, with habitat degradation being one of the leading causes of their decline.
The new Wildlife Rich Habitat Fund will provide thousands of hectares of new habitat across England’s National Parks, National Landscapes and Broads over three years, helping to return nature to people’s favorite places.
The scale and ambition of the upcoming project demonstrates what investing in nature can achieve. For example, the Peak District National Park Authority is working with Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, volunteers and contractors to begin work to transform over 80 hectares of upland moorland at Gun Moor. After years of devastation as the deep peat of the moor dried up and wildlife retreated, the project is restoring 24 hectares of wet moorland, re-wetting the deep peat and creating new native woodland areas on the lower slopes. More funding means more projects like this will be launched.
Minister for Nature Mary Creagh said:
“Our national parks and protected landscapes are home to some of our most neglected species. Our Wild Again funding is already turning the tide of that decline. This will mean more birdsong, flower meadows teeming with bees and butterflies, and new areas of native woodland.”
“We are funding this recovery with our highest ever budget for nature across sectors across some of the UK’s most iconic and beautiful landscapes.”
Mary-Ann Ochota, Independent Chair of the Protected Landscapes Partnership, said:
“This multi-year investment in wildlife-rich habitats is excellent news. The Protected Landscapes team will be empowered to make smart and efficient decisions, and support will be delivered quickly to local delivery partners. These teams know their landscapes, understand the potential for change and can work together to achieve the best results.
“Partnerships that are rooted in locality and build trust are key. The results are thriving landscapes rich in wildlife that are nurtured and cherished by farmers, land managers and local communities. This is at the core of why national parks and national landscapes exist.”
Landscape Conservancy will work closely with other conservation groups, farmers, land managers, and local communities who know their landscapes best.
The funding announced today follows a £90 million commitment made in March to fund species recovery projects. This is the largest investment announced by the government in species recovery as part of the Wild Again movement, which aims to restore nature and bring back lost species, including beaver and white-tailed eagle.
The Wildlife-Rich Habitat Fund forms part of Wild Again: Restoring England’s Wildlife, the government’s umbrella campaign to halt species decline by 2030, working together with Defra to deliver species recovery and habitat restoration across the length of its arms.
This will help us meet our international commitments to protect 30% of natural lands and our statutory environmental law target to restore more than 500,000 hectares of wildlife-rich habitat by 2042.
Joan Edwards, Director of Policy and Communications at The Wildlife Trusts, said:
”Generations have been inspired by the wonderful wildlife found in Britain’s national parks and landscapes. But this special relationship with nature is weakening as climate change, land-use pressures, and pollution take their toll and cause natural decline across the country.
“Today’s announcement of £30 million of new funding to help the recovery of wildlife in protected landscapes is urgently needed if we are to reverse these losses and empower people to restore more habitat in our precious national parks and landscapes. There is still much work to do to bring back thriving wildlife and habitats and achieve important environmental law targets while nature underpins our economy, health and future resilience as a nation. This new funding is a step towards realizing that ambition.”
Martin Lines, CEO of the Natural Farming Network (NFFN), said:
“This funding is positive recognition that farmers are essential partners in protecting and restoring the habitat that makes our protected landscapes special. Through the Farming in Protected Landscapes (FiPL) initiative, agribusinesses have already demonstrated how productive agriculture and natural restoration can work together – creating and managing habitats that support rare wildlife, enhance landscapes and benefit local communities.” “We warmly welcome this announcement, which highlights the importance of farmers in restoring and protecting our most precious landscapes. When farmers are trusted and supported, nature can recover at scale.”
Additional information: The Wildlife-Rich Habitat Fund provides £30 million per financial year (£10 million per financial year) from 2026 to 2029. Of the 44 protected landscape areas in England, 36 are participating in the first year, with all projects funded based on local priorities. Funding will be delivered through the existing Farming in Protected Landscapes (FiPL) program infrastructure. This fund is separate from and does not affect the agriculture budget or the landscape conservation area agriculture program. Projects are prioritized according to the Landscape Conservation Management Plan and Local Nature Restoration Strategy. The Fund forms part of the Government’s wider program of action to restore nature, with environmental improvement plans, land use systems and new legislation to strengthen the purposes and powers of national parks and national landscapes.
