Trump accuses Iran of delaying peace deal to ‘wait’ until US midterms | US News
Donald Trump has accused Iran of trying to delay a peace deal by delaying the US midterm elections in November, in the hope of securing better terms.
“They thought they were going to wait for me, you know, ‘we’re going to wait for him, he has the midterm elections,'” the US president said during a meeting of his cabinet at the White House on Wednesday.
He insisted the approach – supposedly aimed at increasing pressure on the US and global economies by keeping the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz closed – would fail, and claimed Iran “really wants to make a deal”.
“I don’t care about the midterms, look what happened last night,” Trump said, apparently referring to the triumph of Ken Paxton, whom he supported, over incumbent Republican Sen. John Cornyn in the Texas Republican Senate primary.
Trump said Iran’s economy was in freefall, suggesting that made it imperative for Iran to compromise: “They have 250% inflation, their money has no value, their whole economic system is broken.” »
His comments, during the 12th cabinet meeting of Trump’s second term, come as talks aimed at ending the nearly three-month conflict are reportedly at a crucial stage. Current attempts to reach an agreement have so far failed, he said, because “we are not satisfied with it”.
“But we will be,” the president added. “Either that or we’ll just have to finish the job.”
Asked if he would agree to a short-term deal that would allow Iran and Oman to control the Strait of Hormuz, Trump responded: “The Strait will be open to everyone. Nobody will control it. We will monitor it, but nobody will control it. That’s part of the negotiations we’re having. They would like to control it. It’s international waters and Oman will behave like everyone else, otherwise we’ll have to blow them up.”
He said one consequence of a potential deal under discussion would be that the strait – which was a conduit for 20% of the world’s energy supplies before the war – would be opened immediately.
At one point, Trump appeared to contradict himself after renewing his call for Arab allies, including Saudi Arabia and Qatar, to sign the Abraham Accords granting full diplomatic recognition to Israel.
“I think these countries owe us something… I don’t think we should make a deal if they don’t sign it,” he said.
But he backed away when asked if the Iran deal was conditional on more countries joining the accords – which were signed by the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco during his first presidency – saying: “I don’t mean that. I’m not going to tell you what’s contingent.”
He also claimed to have brought about regime change in Iran through the assassination of a generation of the country’s leaders, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, its most powerful figure – although he was succeeded by his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, seen as tougher than his father.
“We didn’t anticipate a regime change, but … we’re dealing with a completely different group of people than we were to begin with,” Trump said. “In fact, I find them more intelligent. One regime has left, another regime has left, we are dealing with the third.”
The gathering was initially scheduled to take place in the bucolic setting of Camp David, the presidential retreat that had previously been the scene of sensitive Middle East negotiations, including the historic Israeli-Egyptian peace accords.
But Trump brought it back to the more usual setting of the White House, citing unfavorable weather forecasts.
The initial decision to hold it at Camp David had raised eyebrows, given that Trump had visited the presidential retreat in the heart of rural Maryland, 62 miles northwest of Washington, far less frequently than most of his predecessors.
The rally comes as Trump’s approval rating plummets and economic pessimism rises amid the war with Iran.
Trump announced over the weekend that a deal to end hostilities was near, although the United States struck Iranian targets on Monday, killing four members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Negotiations would nevertheless continue.
Trump – who said last Saturday that a deal with Iran “had been largely negotiated” – sent confusing signals about the prospects for peace after a largely negative reaction from US right-wing circles and anti-Tehran hawks.
In a social media post on Tuesday, he expressed anger at media commentators who had portrayed the new terms as favorable to Iran and a potential humiliation for it.
“If Iran surrenders…and admits defeat to the great power and might of the magnificent United States, the Failing New York Times, the China Street Journal (WSJ!), the corrupt and now irrelevant CNN, and all other members of the fake news media, will headline that Iran has won a masterful and brilliant victory over the United States of America,” he wrote.
Among those attending the meeting was Tulsi Gabbard, who last week announced her upcoming resignation as director of national intelligence. Gabbard drew Trump’s ire last year after telling Congress that she believed Iran was not seeking nuclear weapons, just months before U.S. forces bombed the country’s uranium enrichment facilities.
Trump paid tribute to Gabbard on Wednesday, calling her a “tremendous person” and drawing a round of applause from the rest of the cabinet. “Tulsi worked tirelessly to restore trust and focus with the intelligence community and they all respected her. They listened to her,” he said.
