Trump’s 4th physical renews public scrutiny of his health

President Trump’s health is under new scrutiny as frequent screenings appear at odds with proclamations of exceptional well-being. This morning, the Commander in Chief publicly announced the fourth review of his second administration. White House correspondent Liz Landers reports what we know – and don’t know – about the president’s health.

Amna Nawaz:

President Trump’s health is under renewed scrutiny tonight, as his more frequent than usual checkups seem at odds with his own proclamations that he is in good health.

This morning, he took his fourth publicly announced exam of his second administration.

Our White House correspondent, Liz Landers, is here with what we know and what we don’t know about the president’s health.

So, Liz, tell us about today’s visit. What do we know?

Liz Landers:

The president remained at Walter Reed Medical Center for approximately 3.5 hours. He was also there, apparently on schedule, to meet and speak with the troops.

But this is the third medical exam he has had in about 13 months. He also had a dental exam a few weeks ago in Florida. He is the oldest president ever inaugurated. But listening to the president and his colleagues, he never ceases to praise his vitality and his health.

He told TRUTH Social after his visit that he completed his six-month physical and everything went perfectly. We have contacted the White House to request more detailed information about the tests that were conducted and what happened while he was there today. White House officials said they were still working on it. We haven’t gotten it yet.

But I spoke earlier today with former White House physician Dr. Jeffrey Kuhlman. He wrote a book about sitting presidents. He served under Clinton, Bush and President Obama. And he added that most octogenarians visit the doctor frequently. President Trump is almost 80 years old. So he said it probably had to do with his age and not necessarily his position as president.

He also explained that a visit to Walter Reed is usually for more advanced medical tests, like a colonoscopy, an MRI, a CT scan, things you can’t do in a White House medical office. They have this facility there, Amna, that does blood work, he said, and certain types of dental exams. And they can also do ultrasounds there.

Amna Nawaz:

So what did Dr. Kuhlman say he would look for if he were President Trump’s doctor?

Liz Landers:

Dr. Kuhlman said he was looking for three main things. Here’s what he told me earlier today.

Dr. Jeffrey Kuhlman:

For an 80-year-old president, advancing age is by far the number one concern. I would worry about their cardiovascular fitness, cancer and making sure they don’t suffer from neurodegenerative disease.

Liz Landers:

Dr. Kuhlman also said that for a patient the president’s age, he would want to do a treadmill test to test their cardiovascular health, as well as a CT scan of their heart to examine the coronary arteries. He said that when it comes to cancer, the president is at lower risk. He is a non-smoker and has always been a non-drinker.

He said, for cognitive health, he would recommend doing more advanced cognitive testing than something quick. And I also asked him about some of the images that people have seen of the President. The president was photographed recently with swollen ankles and bruises on his hands.

The president said the bruises on his hands were from taking an aspirin and shaking hands. He covered them with makeup. Dr. Kuhlman said these may be benign explanations for why the president might have those swollen ankles and bruises on his hands, but he worries about transparency about it and perhaps the public not getting all the information they need.

Amna Nawaz:

We’ll see if the White House releases more information.

Meanwhile, some of the president’s activities have also attracted public attention, including his nighttime social media activity, numerous tweets, etc., his habit of turning a blind eye during some daytime meetings.

Liz Landers:

Yes.

Amna Nawaz:

What have doctors said about the president’s sleep habits?

Liz Landers:

The president posts very late at night, sometimes after 1 a.m. We have seen recent examples of this. Dr. Kuhlman believes that people who survive on lack of sleep are actually not good for their mental or physical health.

So he had some concerns about some of the late night posts that we’ve seen from the president. He also noted that President Biden was evaluated for it and used a CPAP to sleep. And President Trump has regularly attacked President Biden for his lack of energy and stumbling during public events.

But critics of President Trump have recently pointed out some of those moments when he has his eyes closed in meetings, Amna.

Amna Nawaz:

All right, our White House correspondent, Liz Landers.

Liz, thank you.

Liz Landers:

Of course.
