Andy Burnham’s Reform rival hit by new allegations over ‘vile’ messages

Andy Burnham’s Reform UK rival is facing further backlash after publishing a series of explicit and controversial historical social media posts linked to the Makerfield by-election candidate. Recently elected Wigan town councilor and plumber Robert Kenyon has been criticized for what have been described as “vile” remarks found in previous messages made before he entered politics.

Councilor Kenyon is also said to be linked to comments posted on a rugby league forum alleging women are having abortions for “vanity reasons”.

In response, Reform UK said it “fully supports” Councilor Kenyon – who is running for the seat against Andy Burnham in the next vote – and noted that he “is not a polished, professional politician and does not speak like one”, reports the Manchester evening news.

Today, further historic social media posts, apparently made by Cllr Kenyon, were highlighted by campaign group Hope Not Hate, who discovered two X accounts linked to the Reform candidate, one of which had been suspended by the platform and the other deleted.

Elsewhere, the narrative appeared to cast doubt on climate change, calling it a “middle-class problem” in one 2021 article and in another asking whether schoolchildren would learn “about the Ice Age and the fact that the world has warmed since then.”

And in response to another post from April 2020 during lockdown which claimed billionaire businessmen Richard Branson, Philip Green and Joe Lewis had been “bailed out by taxpayers’ money to support their workers”, @robkenyon1 said: “Hang all three.”

The comments are the latest in a series of resurfaced social media posts linked to Mr Kenyon, which have also accused him of sharing misinformation about Covid and homophobic and transphobic slurs.

In response to comments made about her, Carol Vorderman called Cllr Kenyon a “misogynist” and demanded an apology for her “disgusting comments”.

Labor Party chair Anna Turley said earlier: “It’s a really important election, particularly when you consider the candidates, the Reform candidate who has allegedly shown appalling misogyny, sexism, some really vile comments on social media, or someone like Andy Burnham with a great performance record, who is a local lad who really cares about the community there and is going to be a brilliant representative for them.” »

When the Manchester Evening News contacted Reform UK for a response, a party spokesperson said: “Cllr Kenyon made these comments before entering politics. We are confident that he is an excellent candidate who will be a superb local MP for Makerfield.

“Rob is not a polished, professional politician and does not speak like one. That is precisely why he will be an outspoken and effective voice for the ordinary workers of Makerfield.”
